In recognition of his exemplary dedication to the preservation and enhancement of greenways and trails in Indianapolis, Don Miller, the long-serving Land Stewardship Manager at the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, has been honored as the Outstanding Public Official for 2024 by the Greenways Foundation.

For over three decades, Miller has been at the forefront of efforts to promote sustainability and stewardship of the city's green spaces. His commitment goes beyond mere maintenance, as he actively engages with volunteers and community members to ensure the long-term vitality of Indianapolis's natural landscapes.

One notable project that highlights Miller's leadership and vision is the revitalization of a retention pond adjacent to the Fall Creek trail in the Millersville at Fall Creek Valley community. What was once an overgrown eyesore has been transformed into the serene Millersville at Fall Creek Preserve, thanks to Miller's guidance and the dedication of volunteers.

Over the course of four years, Miller worked tirelessly alongside community members to rehabilitate the pond, from reviewing grant applications to organizing workdays and procuring necessary resources. The result is a tranquil oasis along the trail, complete with native plantings, limestone bench seating, and a Millersville sculpture.

Reflecting on the project, Miller emphasized the importance of collaboration and community engagement in achieving sustainable outcomes. "Without the support and dedication of volunteers, none of this would have been possible," he stated. "It's truly a testament to what can be accomplished when we come together with a shared vision for our green spaces."

The recognition from the Greenways Foundation underscores Miller's significant contributions to the Indianapolis community and his unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. As the city continues to prioritize sustainability and green infrastructure, Miller's leadership serves as a guiding light for future initiatives aimed at preserving and enhancing Indianapolis's natural landscapes.
