Goshen Parks & Recreation Recognized as Outstanding Local Government for Trail Advocacy
Goshen Parks & Recreation has been honored as the Outstanding Local Government for 2024 by the Greenways Foundation for its exemplary commitment to trail development and accessibility within the community.
Goshen has a distinguished track record of supporting local and regional trails, with a particular emphasis on ensuring accessibility for all residents. With 14 paved and crushed stone trails spanning over 30 miles, Goshen's trail network serves as vital connectors, linking homes, schools, parks, Goshen College, and various community landmarks.
A notable feature of Goshen's trail system is its integration into the regional network, with three miles of the Pumpkinvine trail passing through the city. This trail seamlessly connects to the Maple City Greenway and MapleHeart Trail, forming a comprehensive regional network that extends to neighboring communities such as Elkhart, Middlebury, and Shipshewana.
Throughout the year, Goshen hosts a variety of events along its trails, further enhancing community engagement and recreational opportunities. Events such as the Kerry's Kids & Teens' Triathlon and the Rock the Quarry Triathlon showcase the city's commitment to promoting active lifestyles and outdoor enjoyment.
In addition to hosting events, Goshen Parks & Recreation has demonstrated innovation in trail accessibility through projects like the Ashley Van Vurst Sensory Trail. In collaboration with ADEC, Inc. and Goshen College, the city developed a free downloadable app that connects trail users to over 900 natural sensory features along the trail. This pioneering initiative enhances the trail experience for individuals of all abilities, reflecting Goshen's dedication to inclusivity and community engagement.
The Greenways Foundation's recognition of Goshen Parks & Recreation as the Outstanding Local Government for 2024 underscores the city's leadership in advancing trail advocacy and promoting outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
