Discovering Inner Peace: A Day of Ecotherapy at 100 Acres Park

Miranda Frausto has a calming presence about her. She wears heart-shaped glasses and a gentle smile. I had the incredible opportunity to attend an ecotherapy session guided by Miranda, who works at Earth Charter Indiana, at the picturesque 100 Acres Park in Indianapolis. The experience was nothing short of transformative. Miranda came prepared with some picnic blankets and led me down the trail to a little path surrounded by wildflowers. As we gathered under the lush canopy of trees, the city’s hustle and bustle seemed a world away, replaced by the gentle sounds of nature.

Our session began with a guided meditation, led by Miranda's soothing voice, encouraging us to ground ourselves and become fully present. We closed our eyes and took deep breaths, inhaling the fresh, earthy scent of the forest. The gentle rustling of leaves, the sprinkling rain, and the distant chirping of birds provided a natural soundtrack that helped us relax and center our minds.

As we opened our eyes, we were encouraged to explore the environment around us using all of our senses. It wasn’t long before we encountered an inchworm making its slow, deliberate way along a leaf. This tiny creature, often overlooked in the rush of daily life, became a symbol of the beauty and complexity of nature. We watched in fascination, feeling a deep sense of connection and respect for this small but significant life form.

The benefits of spending time in nature are well-documented. In Japan, the practice of "forest bathing" or Shinrin-yoku, has been shown to have significant health benefits. A study published in Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine found that forest bathing trips were associated with increased feelings of well-being and lower levels of stress hormones like cortisol. Participants also experienced improved mood and enhanced immune function.

Nature’s therapeutic effects extend beyond the psychological. Walking on trails, as we did at 100 Acres Park, offers a range of physical health benefits. Regular trail walking can improve cardiovascular health, enhance muscle tone, and boost overall physical fitness. The varied terrain provides a natural workout, engaging different muscle groups and promoting balance and coordination.

As our session came to a close, we gathered once more for a final meditation, reflecting on the day’s experiences. The sense of peace and fulfillment was profound. We left the trail not only with memories of a beautiful day but also with a renewed appreciation for the natural world and its profound impact on our well-being.

Attending ecotherapy sessions, is more than just a day out in the park. It’s a step towards reclaiming our health and happiness, a chance to reconnect with the natural world and with ourselves.
