No Funding for Next Level Trails in HB1001: Why It Matters and How You Can Help
Indiana’s trail network has been a crucial investment in our state’s health, economy, and transportation infrastructure. Since 2019, the Next Level Trails program has provided $180 million in funding, expanding and enhancing trails across the state. However, despite a demonstrated need and a request for $242 million in additional funding, the current state budget bill, HB1001, does not include any appropriations for Next Level Trails. This is a significant setback for Indiana’s trails and the communities that rely on them.
Why Funding for Trails Matters
1. Economic Benefits
Trails are powerful economic engines for Indiana. Communities with well-developed trail systems attract tourism, boost local businesses, and increase property values. Outdoor recreation contributes billions to the state’s economy, supporting jobs and generating tax revenue. Without continued investment, Indiana risks losing out on these economic opportunities.
2. Health and Wellness
Trails provide safe and accessible spaces for exercise, reducing healthcare costs by promoting physical activity and mental well-being. Hoosiers of all ages benefit from the opportunity to walk, run, bike, and enjoy nature, helping to combat obesity and other health-related issues.
3. Conservation and Environmental Impact
Trails protect green spaces, improve air and water quality, and provide vital habitats for wildlife. Preserving and expanding trail networks ensures future generations can enjoy Indiana’s natural beauty while mitigating the effects of urban sprawl.
4. Transportation and Connectivity
Trails offer an alternative means of transportation, reducing traffic congestion and pollution. For many Hoosiers, trails serve as critical commuting routes, linking neighborhoods to schools, workplaces, and public transit. Investing in trail infrastructure supports a more sustainable and connected Indiana.
A Call to Action: Speak Up for Trails
The omission of Next Level Trails funding in HB1001 is a missed opportunity to build upon Indiana’s progress in outdoor recreation and active transportation. However, there is still time to advocate for this essential funding.
A public testimony meeting for the Ways and Means Committee is scheduled for Thursday, February 6th at 11 AM in Room 404 at the Indiana Statehouse. This is an opportunity for Hoosiers to voice their support for trails and urge lawmakers to allocate funding for the Next Level Trails program.
Your voice matters! If you value Indiana’s trails and want to see continued investment in our state’s outdoor infrastructure, consider attending the hearing or reaching out to your state representatives. Let’s ensure that Indiana remains a leader in trail development for the benefit of all Hoosiers.
