Zionsville, Whitestown Big-4 Rail Trail Extension Recognized as 2024 Outstanding Trail Project

The Big-4 Rail Trail, a cherished amenity in the heart of Zionsville's park system, has been honored as the Outstanding Trail Project for 2024 by the Greenways Foundation. This recognition celebrates the tireless efforts and collaborative spirit of the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department and Whitestown, marking a significant milestone in regional connectivity and community enhancement.

Stretching across Eagle Township, the Big-4 Rail Trail serves as a vital link to eight parks within the Zionsville Park system, offering connectivity and accessibility to residents and visitors alike. The 12-foot paved pathway, extending over five miles, forms the central spine of Zionsville's extensive network of interconnected trails, totaling over 20 miles of pathways.

The ambitious project, which commenced over three decades ago, gained momentum in 2021 with the dedicated commitment of the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department to expedite its completion. Beginning with the expansion of both the southern and northern corridors to their respective municipal borders, construction efforts saw significant progress. The southern expansion, initiated from Starkey Avenue and extending southward to Zionsville Road, culminated in the connection to the Rail Trail corridor in Boone County. This expansion facilitated access to the newly developed Overley-Worman Park and Vonterra subdivision, accompanied by the construction of a welcoming southern trailhead poised to host future trail events.

Turning their attention northward, the project continued with the construction to connect the trail to Whitestown, a pivotal step in enhancing regional connectivity. The culmination of these efforts, marked by the completion of both the northern expansion and southern trailhead in 2023, solidified the Big-4 Rail Trail's status as a premier recreational asset in the region.

In acknowledgment of the perseverance and collaborative endeavor demonstrated by the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department and Whitestown, the Greenways Foundation proudly recognizes the Big-4 Rail Trail extension as the Outstanding Trail Project for 2024. This accolade underscores the project's significance in fostering community engagement, promoting active lifestyles, and advancing regional connectivity.
